Harkey Appointed Chair of NCBA Criminal Justice Section

We are thrilled to announce that attorney W. Scott Harkey has been appointed as the Chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA). This prestigious appointment recognizes Mr. Harkey’s exceptional legal expertise, commitment to justice, and dedication to serving the legal community. 

As Chair of the Criminal Justice Section, Mr. Harkey will have a significant impact on shaping the future of criminal law practice in North Carolina. Through his leadership, he will facilitate the exchange of ideas, advance initiatives, organize informative events, and promote professional development opportunities for members of the section. His guidance will undoubtedly foster excellence and encourage collaboration among legal professionals.

I am deeply humbled and grateful for the opportunity to continue my service with the North Carolina Bar Association. I appreciate the trust of NCBA President Patti Ramseur and the members of our section. I look forward to continuing our mission and serving the North Carolina legal community.

Harkey’s role as Chair will commence on July 1, 2023. He previously served as Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and 3-year council member. As a former prosecutor and current defense attorney, Harkey brings a diverse background to the position.  

The North Carolina Bar Association

The North Carolina Bar Association, founded in 1899, is a professional organization that serves the legal community across the state. It is the largest voluntary organization for legal professionals in North Carolina. With a membership consisting of attorneys, judges, legal professionals, and law students, the NCBA promotes excellence in the practice of law, provides valuable resources and educational opportunities, and advocates for the improvement of the legal system.

NCBA Criminal Justice Section

The Criminal Justice Section is one of the largest sections within the NCBA and it is focused on helping North Carolina best serve their clients. It serves as a platform for attorneys and legal professionals to exchange knowledge, engage in meaningful discussions, and stay updated on the latest developments in criminal justice. The section consists of officers, council members, and committees. The section annually hosts the Peter S. Gilchrist and Wade M. Smith Awards Banquet and provides CLE opportunities related to North Carolina criminal law.

About W. Scott Harkey

W. Scott Harkey is an attorney and managing partner for Harkey Litigation in Winston-Salem, NC who has been practicing criminal law since 2012. He specializes in white-collar criminal defense for individuals facing state and federal investigations by authorities such as the FBI, Department of Justice, SBI, and other local agencies. A former special prosecutor and Board-Certified Specialist in North Carolina criminal law, Harkey routinely handles other complex serious felony matters in North Carolina state and federal courts.
